October, 2011 - The Department of African Studies in cooperation with the University of Cologne organised a Conference The Body in Language: Lexicon, Metaphor, Grammar and Culture that took place at the University of Warsaw on October 21-22. The conference welcomed over 60 participants from around the world. The plenary talks were given by the following distinguished speakers: Alexandra Aikhenvald from James Cook University, Bernd Heine from the University of Cologne and Maarten Mous from the University of Leiden. July, 2011 - On July 25th, 2011, The Department of African Studies had an honour of hosting a delegation of MPs from several African countries who came to Warsaw as participants of the conference African Development Cooperation Strategies towards the Millennium Development Goals – Lessons from the New EU Member States organised by the Polish Parliament and the AWEPA association.

May, 2011 – Our department organised an event under the name “Days of Africa” on 4th to 6th May. Many lectures, open language courses and discussions took place during the event. We hosted many foreign and Polish guests, including Prof. S. Baldi from Naples, Prof. P. J. Jaggar from London, Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo from Frankfurt, Dr. George Alao, Dr. Jean de Dieu Karangwa and Dr. Delombera Negga from Paris, MP John Godson and Dr. Grzegorz Waliński.

October, 2010 – Journalists from three East African countries came to visit our Department. They came from Kenya ("The Star" and BBC Kenya), Uganda ("The Monitor") and Rwanda ("The New Times Publication"). They were interested in our academic life, studying conditions and African interests and studies at the University of Warsaw.

October, 2010 – Our Department welcomed two guests, Dr. Jeremy Prestholdt, historian of East Africa and the Indian Ocean from the University of California – San Diego and Dr. Anne K. Bang  from the University of Bergen. On 18th of October Dr. Jeremy Prestholdt delivered a lecture entitled "Locating the Indian Ocean: Thoughts on the Historical Reconstitution of Space", and on 19th of October Dr. Anne K. Bang presented: "The Ratib al-Haddad. Tradition and Transition of a Text-based Ritual in East Africa, c. 1950-2010".

June, 2010 – Dr. Matthias Brenzinger from the University of Cologne (Germany) presented two lectures during his visit: "Gestures Studies in Africa: Bimodal Communication among the Khwe and ?Anikhwe: The Vanishing Art of Communicating in the Bush" and "The Twelve Khoisan Modern Languages. Overview and Current Distribution of Speech Communities, Based on the more Recent Empirical Data Provided by Leading Khoisanists".

May, 2010 – Dr. Getie Gelaye, Amharic language lecturer and a specialist on the oral literature of Ethiopia from the University of Hamburg, was our guest. He presented two lectures on "The Poetic Traditions of Azmari in Ethiopia" and "Qene and Sem enna Werq (Wax and Gold), Ethiopian Poetry in Amharic, Definitions, Possible Techniques and Mechanisms of Analysis."

April, 2010 – Dr. George Alao from INALCO, Paris, was our guest and during his stay he presented lectures on "Languages, Multiculturalism and Nation-building: the Nigerian Experience", "Politeness among the Yoruba and in the Yoruba Language and Culture", and "First-timer Approach to Learning Yoruba: a Practical Initiation Course".

December 2009 - In celebration of the 40th anniversary of the African Studies at the University of Warsaw the Department organised a one-day session Languages, cultures and societies of Africa in the process of transformation.

May, 2009 – Prof. Lionel Posthumus from the University of Johannesburgu (SA) presented the following lectures during his stay at our Department: "Afrikaans as a creole language”, "Language Planning and Language Usage in South Africa", "Tense Systems of the Bantu languages".

April, 2009 (Erasmus visit) – Dr. Jean de Dieu Karangwa from INALCO in Paris presented lectures on “Language and Identity in Rwanda” and "The Swahili Language".

October - November, 2008 – Yakubu Magaji Azare, M.A., from the Department of Nigerian Languages, Bayero University, Kano was attached to the Department and continued his research on „A Morpho-Semantic Study of Hausa Concrete Deverbal Forms”. On 20th October he presented the results of his work during the staff meeting.

March, 2008 - Every year Ms. Bożena Mierzejewska from the National Museum makes it possible for us to visit a (temporarily hidden) collection of Ethiopian crosses donated to the Museum by Wacław Korabiewicz. We cordially thank Ms. Mierzejewska for all information and inspiration.

October, 2007 – Prof. Rudolf Leger from University of Frankfurt delivered four lectures: "The 'Urheimat' of the Proto-Hamitic/Afrasian Speaking Peoples and Their Early Migrations with Specific Reference to the Chadic Speaking Groups", "An Overlook about the Kwami and its Pecularities ('Northern' Bole-Tangale Group)", "Methods of Linguistic Field Research", and "Verbal Classes and Middle Voice - West Chadic and Fulfulde (a Comparative Approach)".

May, 2007 – Prof. Gaël Brunet from INALCO (Paris) visited the Department and on 10th May delivered two lectures: 1. "The Beginnings of Cinema in Africa”, and 2. "The Most Important Personages of the African Cinema”.

May, 2007 – Prof. Xavier Garnier, Paris University XIII, presented a lecture on 24th May entitled "Early Novels in African Languages".

March, 2007 - Dr. Matthias Brenzinger  from the University of Cologne (Germany) visited the Department and between 4th and 7th of March presented the following lectures: "Conceptual Loss in Space and Time", " Language Diversity and Poverty", "What is Language Endangerment", "Languages without Numbers".

December, 2006 – Prof. Tekeste Negash from the University Dalarna, Fallun (Sweden), presented the following lectures: "Education, Social Change and Modernization in Ethiopia", "Italian Colonialism in Eritrea and Ethiopia", "Decolonization in Eritrea", and  "From Federation to Independence and to War: Relations between Eritrea and Ethiopia".

November, 2006 - A golden jubilee of academic work was celebrated in honour of Professor Joanna Mantel-Niećko on the 23rd November in Kazimierzowski Palace on the University Campus. Speeches were given by: Professor Wojciech Tygielski, Vice-Rector for Research and International Relations, Professor Jolanta Sierakowska-Dyndo, Director of the Oriental Institute, Professor Stanisław Piłaszewicz, Head of the Department of African Languages and Cultures, and Mr. Mersha Woldu, President of Ethiopian-Polish Association Selam. Congratulation letters were read by Dr. Seifu Gebru from Adam Mickiewicz University (on behalf of Ethiopian-Polish Association Selam) and by Dr. Taddese Haile (on behalf of Ethiopian Ambassador in Berlin). Professor Witold Witakowski from Uppsala University presented Professor Mantel-Niećko with a Jubilee Festschrift Book. Professor Mantel-Niećko gave a short lecture on the Ethiopian Studies and their role in the globalized system of education. Traditional Ethiopian music accompanied the toasts and congratulations.
